Xsens Avior (RTK) GNSS/INS brings high-performance OEM navigation to compact embedded systems

Xsens introduces the Xsens Avior GNSS/INS and Xsens Avior RTK GNSS/INS, compact OEM modules that combine Xsens inertial sensing with u-blox GNSS technology to deliver accurate orientation and reliable GNSS-aided navigation for demanding embedded and outdoor applications.

The new Xsens Avior (RTK) GNSS/INS portfolio extends Xsens’ highest-performing OEM inertial platform from 3D orientation to 3D global position, combining high-end sensing components, refined sensor fusion, and new generation u-blox GNSS receivers in a robust aluminum housing.

Built for applications where size, integration flexibility, and navigation performance are critical, Xsens Avior supports drones, outdoor mobile robots, autonomous systems, marine surface applications, surveying, mapping, and other embedded outdoor platforms.

With broad interface support, a low SWaP-C design, and compatibility with the established Xsens software ecosystem, Xsens Avior gives OEM developers a powerful new option for deep system integration.

High-performance OEM inertial sensing

Xsens Avior (RTK) GNSS/INS is built on Xsens’ highest-performing OEM inertial core, combining advanced sensing components with refined sensor fusion for accurate and consistent orientation in demanding conditions.

This strong inertial foundation supports GNSS-aided navigation where motion, vibration, and changing satellite visibility can affect positioning and orientation performance. The compact aluminum OEM housing adds robustness while keeping the module suitable for embedded designs where size, weight, power, and cost all matter.

Key specifications include:

    • Roll and pitch accuracy: 0.2° RMS
    • Yaw/heading accuracy: 0.8° RMS for Xsens Avior GNSS/INS; 0.5° RMS for Xsens Avior RTK GNSS/INS
    • Position accuracy: 1 m CEP for Xsens Avior GNSS/INS; centimeter-level positioning for Xsens Avior RTK GNSS/INS
    • Gyroscope bias stability: 8°/h
    • Accelerometer bias stability: 15 µg
    • Dimensions: 36.8 x 40 x 15.7 mm
    • Weight: 35.2 g
    • Power consumption: < 0.5 W

Xsens inertial expertise with u-blox GNSS technology

Xsens Avior (RTK) GNSS/INS brings together Xsens inertial sensing and sensor-fusion expertise with u-blox GNSS technology for reliable satellite-based positioning in compact OEM systems.

The Xsens Avior GNSS/INS pairs with the u-blox MAX-F10S dual-band GNSS receiver, supporting all major GNSS constellations simultaneously to improve satellite visibility and deliver robust position, velocity, and time data in challenging environments.

The Xsens Avior RTK GNSS/INS pairs with the quad-band u-blox ZED-X20P receiver with RTK support. This new GNSS architecture is designed to improve positioning continuity and RTK availability in real-world outdoor conditions.

For applications that require high-accuracy positioning, the RTK variant supports:

    • Stronger satellite availability
    • Improved multipath resilience
    • Faster RTK convergence
    • Faster re-acquisition after signal loss
    • Compatibility with modern correction services, including PointPerfect and Galileo High Accuracy Service

Together, Xsens inertial sensing and u-blox GNSS technology help maintain navigation performance when outdoor conditions become more challenging.

Flexible integration for embedded systems

Xsens Avior (RTK) GNSS/INS is designed for deep integration into embedded and outdoor applications. It expands the interface set beyond previous-generation OEM GNSS/INS modules, supporting:

  • UART
  • SPI
  • I2C
  • CAN
  • CAN-FD
  • Second UART interface

This gives developers more flexibility when integrating Xsens Avior into industrial systems, autonomous vehicles, robotic platforms, marine surface systems, and other embedded applications.

CAN-FD enables higher-bandwidth communication, while CAN input control messages make it easier to interact with the module from the host system.

Easier evaluation and testing

The Xsens development kit gives customers access to all supported interfaces and allows simultaneous data streaming over multiple interfaces.

This helps engineering teams evaluate configurations, validate communication paths, and test integration options before moving to deeper subsystem integration. It makes Xsens Avior practical for both early-stage development and final embedded deployment.

New outputs for advanced navigation systems

Xsens Avior (RTK) GNSS/INS introduces additional outputs and features for applications that require more than basic orientation and positioning data.

Covariance output provides real-time uncertainty estimates for orientation and position outputs, enabling downstream localization, state-estimation, and sensor-fusion systems to use Xsens Avior data with proper weighting.

For marine applications, the Avior MRU configuration also provides real-time heave output, supporting marine robotics, offshore systems, unmanned surface vessels, and vessel-based measurement platforms.

These capabilities help developers build more complete and reliable navigation systems around Xsens Avior.

Seamless Xsens ecosystem compatibility

Xsens Avior GNSS/INS works within the established Xsens software ecosystem, giving customers access to higher performance without changing their workflow or retraining their team.

Engineering teams can continue using familiar tools, SDKs, and drivers already available for the MTi product line, including:

    • MT Software Suite
    • C++ SDK
    • C# SDK
    • Python SDK
    • MATLAB support
    • ROS 1 and ROS 2 drivers

This allows engineering teams to move to higher inertial performance and newer GNSS capabilities while keeping their development workflow familiar.

For existing Xsens customers, Xsens Avior provides a clear upgrade path from the MTi-670 and MTi-680 generation to a more powerful OEM platform with broader interface support, newer GNSS technology, and stronger integration flexibility.

Applications and availability

Xsens Avior GNSS/INS and Xsens Avior RTK GNSS/INS are designed for applications that depend on compact, reliable, and integration-friendly GNSS-aided navigation, including:

    • Drones and UAVs
    • Payload and platform stabilization
    • Marine surface systems and USVs
