Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proved it. Sandfall Interactive, a French indie studio with around 30 people at the peak of production, captured more than four and a half hours of cinematics with an Xsens setup acquired through the Xsens Indie Program. What does an indie team actually need from mocap? 

Budgets differ, but the job list is remarkably consistent: 

  • Believable movement for locomotion, combat, and cutscenes. 

  • A setup that works in an office, a spare room, or a rented space. 

  • One person able to run the whole session. 

  • Clean data, because every cleanup hour is a development hour lost. 

  • A reliable route into Unity or Unreal Engine, for real-time review and final export. 

  • A total cost the studio can plan around, including cleanup time.

Option 1: AI and markerless mocap for fast prototyping 

AI mocap tools extract motion from ordinary video, so a phone or camera can become a capture device. Many services offer free credits or entry plans, making this the easiest way to test an idea without buying hardware. 

For prototyping, that speed is valuable. You can block out a combat idea, import it into the engine, and judge the timing on the same day. Results vary with lighting, camera position, occlusion, floor contact, and the speed of the movement. Before using markerless data in production, test representative moves and measure the cleanup time, not only the capture time. 

Option 2: Entry-level mocap suits for limited budgets 

Entry-level inertial suits bring dedicated capture hardware within reach of smaller budgets. For a first experiment with custom animation, or a stylized project with a limited number of moves, they can be a practical step up from video-based capture. 

Compare more than the purchase price. Test foot contact, fast turns, longer takes, calibration, export formats, support, and the time needed to prepare data for your engine. A lower upfront cost only saves money when the workflow also keeps manual correction under control. 

Option 3: Professional inertial mocap for real-time production

Sandfall Interactive needed to capture more than four and a half hours of cinematics for Expedition 33 without a permanent mocap stage. The team used its portable Xsens setup in the office, at home, and in temporary rented spaces, which made pickup sessions and late changes easier to manage.

The team also kept one skeleton structure across its characters, which made retargeting in Unreal Engine easier and reduced technical overhead. 

The lesson for a small team is practical: standardize the skeleton early, then keep capture, retargeting, and scene review inside a repeatable workflow.

How a six-person team captured 83 pages with one suit 

Project Vesperi shows how far the same principle can scale down. A six-person college team used one Xsens suit to capture roughly 83 pages of performance in six days. With only one actor in the suit at a time, the team recorded each character separately and brought the takes together in Unreal Engine 5.

The team used Xsens HD Reprocessing to reduce technical cleanup, then focused its animation time on creative choices and prop interactions. For a small animation team, that is where higher-quality data creates real production value. 

Option 4: Rent a studio or outsource the shoot 

Studio rental removes the hardware purchase and can add experienced operators, performers, and data processing. The final cost depends on the location, stage, crew, performers, capture time, and level of cleanup, so compare quotes on the same scope. 

For a single trailer or a small set of clips, outsourcing can be efficient. The trade-off is less control over timing. Every pickup requires another booking, and iteration follows the studio’s calendar. For ongoing gameplay animation or cinematic production, compare the total cost of repeated sessions with owning a system.

  • Testing an idea or entering a game jam: start with AI or markerless tools and keep the workflow light. 

  • Capturing a modest number of stylized moves: test an entry-level suit and measure the full cleanup workflow before committing. 

  • Shipping a story-driven, cinematic, or combat-heavy game: compare a professional inertial system against the cost and delay of repeated external shoots.
