Xsens to exhibit at Ocean Business 2011

Xsens will be exhibiting at Ocean Business 2011, Southampton (UK), on booth D10. Xsens is the market leader in low-cost MEMS based motion sensors for use in sonar systems, ROV’s and AUV’s, USBL and ship motion detection. Xsens’ Motion Tracker series (MTi and MTi-G) are top of the line miniature motion sensors that have been the top-pick for integration in many innovative products by leading companies in the marine industry. These companies demand the highest quality and a stable supply chain and include Sonardyne, Evologics, Saab Underwater Systems, Applied Acoustics, Fugro, CodaOctopus, Kongsberg, Liquid Robotics and many others.

Ocean Business is one of the most important events for the ocean technology industry with 250 exhibitors and almost 3000 attendees. Registration for Ocean Business is free and Southampton has direct flight connections with 30 cities in Western Europe.

Last year at Oceanology 2010, Xsens celebrated its 10 year anniversary with a luncheon where many of Xsens’ customers and partners were present, among others Hypack, Seabed, Septentrio, MARIN Research Institute and RADAC. Over the past decade, these companies have provided crucial feedback to Xsens’ engineering team in designing products that are an excellent fit to the requirements of the oceanographic industry. This has resulted in an intuitive and well-described communication protocol on various serial interfaces (RS232, RS422, RS485 and USB), as well as support for industry standard NMEA and a free mounting orientation.

Hydrography-specific and synchronization features

The RS422 interface described above allows for full-duplex communication over a cable length of up to 400 meter. Baud rates can be as low as 4800 bps and as high as 921k6 bps, with update rates between 0 Hz (polling) and 256 Hz. Timing is important in any multi-sensor system. Therefore, Xsens’ MTi and MTi-G can be used as the master sensor in an array of sensors that need to be synchronized. Next to many synchronization options and timing possibilities, the MTi and MTi-G offer AnalogIn ports that can be used to sample analog sensors. Please contact the sales department for the synchronization application notes (info@xsens.com), containing examples and tips.

Because of the small physical footprint, onboard processing and configurable output options, the power-efficient MTi and MTi-G are flexible, easy to integrate motion sensors. The required communication bandwidth and computation power are extremely low, which allows for integration into any application. Example code is available for Linux, Windows and low-level communication.
