MVN BIOMECH has been designed specifically for biomechanics end-users.

It is an ambulant, full-body, 3D human kinematic, camera-less measurement system. MVN BIOMECH combines state-of-the-art hardware: MEMS inertial sensors with advanced software: Xsens sensor fusion algorithms and validated biomechanical models. The result is highly accurate kinematic data regardless of the capture environment: in a research lab, on a factory floor, in a car, on the ski slopes, or even in the sky with no need for simulated test environments.

The results of MVN BIOMECH trials can easily be used in other software applications.

Siemens PLM Software

Xsens has partnered with Siemens PLM Software to enable fast and easy integration of MVN BIOMECH's highly accurate 3D data with the world-class software packages of the Tecnomatix-suite, Jack (7.1) and Process Simulate Human (PSH 10.1).

Improve time to market using Xsens 3D motion capture data in Jack and Process Simulate Human (PSH). Real-time motion capture data streamed real-time into Siemens PLM software packages enables realistic task analysis of real humans carrying out real movements.

MVN BIOMECH is a mobile solution and can be used anywhere: indoors on an assembly line, on a factory floor, in tight spaces like a car or an airplane, as well as outdoors, without the need for simulated environments or additional equipment.

Dassault Systems using Haption

MVN data can be streamed in real-time, via middleware from Haption to Dassault ergonomics software packages as follows:

  • Delmia V5 using Haption’s RTI Delmia
  • Catia V5 using Haption’s IFC Core and IFC Human
  • 3DVIA Virtools using Haption’s IPP Core and IPP Human

Haption for Xsens

Using MVN BIOMECH with Haption’s IPSI, it is possible to analyse real data in a car, aeroplane, as well as immerge the human character directly into the digital mockup from Dassault software packages to validate future development, including assembly line, product, tooling, with realtime collision detection.

V5 Human, Human Builder, Catia™ V5, Delmia™ V5, 3DVIA Virtools are trademarks from Dassault System
Virtuoase and IPSI are trademarks of Haption

Visual 3D from C-Motion

A successfully tested software application for reading C3D exported using MVN BIOMECH is Visual3D software from C-Motion. A free CMO/C3D reader can be downloaded from C-Motion.

Visual3D is hardware and marker set independent. Marker sets can be easily imported for users to create purpose-built models. Using the 63 marker set from MVN BIOMECH, full body 3D kinematic analysis is possible. Its analytical power and object architecture makes Visual3D a compelling product for clinical assessments, visualizing 3D data, and measuring the performance of movement related therapies, sports related motion, virtual reality activities, and many other biomechanical applications.

MVN Studio PRO Software

MVN Studio PRO is included with every Xsens MVN BIOMECH order.

MVN Studio PRO is a software application for capturing motion of the subject wearing the MVN suit/Strap system.

MVN BIOMECH human models

MVN BIOMECH uses a 23 segment biomechanical model with 22 joints.
Each joint is specified by statistical parameters for 6DOF joint laxity.
An advanced spine and shoulder model is used to compute the kinematics of the spine and shoulder blades.
Anthropometric scaling or user-specified segment dimensions.

Sensor to segment calibration

Easy calibration, with animated instructions. Feedback of expected accuracy provided and advice for improvement (when necessary).

Using preset delay, calibration can be carried out without assistance.

Basic calibration

  • Duration <10 s
  • Requires only subject and foot lengths as input
  • Pose easy to replicate for range of subjects

Advanced calibration

  • 10-30 seconds per additional step
  • Advanced subject specific calibration determines MTx alignment and/or subject specific dimensions

Note: Calibration procedures for subjects with limited range of motion are also possible

3D translation

  • Double integration of body segment accelerations allows for jumping/running (permanent floor contact is not needed)
  • ~2% error in travelled distance (without external aiding)
  • Advanced external contact model detects body world contacts to enable crawling, sitting, cartwheels etc.
  • Full control over external contact points
  • Seamless fusion with aiding technologies possible1

Magnetic environment

Full immunity to temporary magnetic disturbances (~30 seconds).

Visual warning of disturbed environment.

Addition of KiC means that during dynamic measurements, highly accurate joint angle data can still be produced over long periods even in magnetically disturbed environments.

Easy synchronization with third party devices

MVN Studio PRO 3.4 and above supports easy synchronization with third party devices.

  • Start and / or stop recording of third party systems
  • Use third party systems to start and /or stop recording in MVN Studio
  • 0-3.3V TTL pulses

Xsens hardware (the Awinda Station) is needed. Awinda Station has 4 BNC ports:

  • 2 sync in
  • 2 sync out

Local, permanent disturbances

High degree of immunity, performance will depend on motion and environment.

Soft tissue artifacts

Minimized to ~2 degrees RMS using redundancy in measurement and biomechanical constraints.

Multiple person motion capture

Up to four person motion capture on one PC.

Prop/object tracking
