The MTi-G-700 GPS/INS is based on Xsens’ high-performance MTi 100-series with the addition of an onboard GPS receiver. This GPS-aided, IMU-enhanced Inertial Navigation System outputs a wide range of data, such as drift free 3D orientation data, 3D position and velocity data, 3D calibrated acceleration, rate of turn, magnetic field data and pressure data. The inertial data is also available in delta_q and delta_vel data, which is coning and sculling compensated at 2 kHz. Next to dynamic data, the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS outputs drift free referenced 3D orientation data. Orientation data is GPS-aided, thus GPS improves the orientation estimates, especially for heading and long-lasting accelerations. The IMU-enhanced 3D velocity and 3D position bridges GPS outages and has a higher integrity than GPS position and velocity only. The resulting position update rate is up to 400 Hz.

Vibration rejecting gyroscopes and signal processing pipeline

The MTi-G-700 GPS/INS uses the same vibration rejecting gyroscopes and signal processing pipeline as the entire MTi 100-series. With the GPS time pulses, the clock of the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS is referenced to UTC, making the time accurate to less than 1 ppm.

Xsens Estimation Engine (XEE)

XEE from the MTi 100-series is also used in the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS. The MTi-G-700 GPS/INS will output the same data as the MTi-300 when facing long-lasting GPS outages. Additional tuning of changing the carefully tuned filter setting profiles is not necessary. The complexity of the systems in which the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS will be used makes XEE, which goes beyond traditional (Extended) Kalman filtering, the best choice for navigation and tracking challenges.

Innovative hardware design

The MTi-G-700 GPS/INS is available as an IP67 anodized aluminum version and as OEM. The encased MTi-G has a user-friendly 9-pins push-pull connector offering USB, a serial connection and 3 GPIOs. Alignment is made easy on the 7 alignment aids on the base plate. The OEM version of the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS weighs only 11 grams and measures 37x33x12 mm, interfacing via a 24-pins connector for maximum flexibility.

The MTi-G-700 GPS/INS is part of a family of MTi products: the MTi-10 series and MTi-100 series (including the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS). All of these products are fully interchangeable in terms of software interfacing and mechanical installation.

Although the two series are identical in software and hardware interfacing, there are several distinctive differences:

  • Gyroscopes: the MTi 10-series uses industrial gyroscopes with a bias stability of 18º/h. The MTi-100 series uses the latest vibration-rejecting gyroscopes featuring an in-run bias stability of 10º/h. Noise density and g-sensitivity are significantly lower as well. This results in a higher immunity against vibrations, a better heading in magnetic distorted environments and an overall more robust orientation.

  • Sensor fusion algorithm: the MTi 10-series orientation is calculated by the proven Xsens Kalman Filter (XKF3i) sensor fusion algorithm. In the MTi 100-series, the orientation (and position) is estimated by the Xsens Estimation Engine (XEE), a powerful sensor fusion algorithm that goes beyond traditional Kalman Filtering. XEE is more flexible and thus copes better with e.g. measurement outliers or distortions.

  • The calibration of the MTi 100-series is more extensive to fully benefit from all the specifications of the gyroscopes.

  • The MTi 100-series includes MTi-G-700 GPS/INS which is the successor of the first GPS/IMU integrated product in this class (Xsens MTi-G, introduced in 2007). The orientation of the MTi-G-700 is GPS-aided, so that long-lasting accelerations have no effect. When GPS is temporarily unavailable, the INS bridges these GPS outages and ensures a higher integrity than GPS position and velocity only. The resulting position update rate is up to 400 Hz.

    MTi-G-700 GPS/INS Development Kit

    First-time users are advised to start with the MT Development Kit. The Development Kit contains an MTi-MTi-G-700 GPS/INS, a GPS antenna, a USB cable, a suitcase and the MT Software Suite on a USB flash drive.

    MT Software Suite

    The MT Software Suite gives easy access to Xsens’ products, allowing users to configure and easily integrate the MTi 10-series/MTi 100-series Motion Trackers in their own applications. The suite contains a specially developed and easy-to-use graphical user interface, as well as drivers for various operating systems and many other useful tools, example source code and documentation.

    Although it is easy to set up the MTi via the low-level XBus protocol, communication is made easy with the Xsens Device API (XDA) which is completely in C-code. The MT SDK includes the following development tools:
    • C++ wrapper
    • Examples for C, C++ and Matlab.
    • Supported operating systems: Windows and Linux.
    • DLL for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
    • Extensive documentation on the MTi, the XBus protocol and the SDK (PDF and HTML)
    The communication interface is identical for all products (MTi-10 series and MTi-100-series, including MTi-G-700 GPS/INS).

    MT Manager

    The MT Manager is Windows application for easy access to the full capabilities of Xsens’ Motion Trackers. It is the tool for getting acquainted with, configuring and analyzing the Motion Trackers. The MT Manager is also capable of recording and playback MT data.
    • Real time visualization of all MT data
    • Logging, exporting and reprocessing data
    • Changing and storing settings in the firmware

    MT Development Tools

    The Xsens Device API (XDA) will help save time in interfacing in a reliable way with Xsens Motion Trackers in a Windows environment. Direct interfacing gives full control and maximum flexibility. The example code can be easily extended to a user-specific program and may be incorporated in programs of customers.
