The MTi 100-series is Xsens’ high-performance product line, consisting of:
  • MTi-100 IMU: Inertial Measurement Unit
  • MTi-200 VRU: Vertical Reference Unit
  • MTi-300 AHRS: Attitude and Heading Reference System
  • MTi-G-700 GPS/INS: GPS-aided Inertial Navigation System
Depending on the product, the MTi 100-series output drift free 3D orientation data, 3D position and velocity data, 3D calibrated acceleration, rate of turn, magnetic field data and pressure data.

Wide range of products

Available in four different integration levels, the MTi 100-series spans a wide range of products that gives a choice to the system integrator to use the best solution for a specific application. The 100-IMU offers (calibrated) data: rate of turn, acceleration, magnetic field and barometric pressure. The inertial data is also available in delta_q and delta_vel data, which is coning and sculling compensated at 2 kHz. The MTi-200 VRU and MTi-300 AHRS offer next to the data of the IMU referenced, drift free roll and pitch. The MTi-200 VRU outputs unreferenced heading, where the MTi-300 AHRS uses the magnetic field to stabilize the heading. For more information on the MTi-G-700, go to MTi-G-700 GPS/INS.

Vibration rejecting gyroscopes and signal processing pipeline

The MTi 100-series uses the latest vibration rejecting gyroscopes. Together with a perfectly balanced signal processing and a high bandwidth for the inertial sensors, the resulting data is immune to vibrations. Coning and sculling compensation is performed at an industry-leading frequency of 2 kHz. All internal sensors feature a built-in self test.

Xsens Estimation Engine (XEE)

XEE is the next step in orientation estimation. Going beyond traditional (Extended) Kalman Filtering and without the limitations associated with that, XEE allows for more complex systems and copes better with e.g. outliers and non-Gaussian noise. XEE comes with several carefully tuned filter setting profiles to be used in specific conditions and environments. This way it is possible to choose the response of XEE during e.g. magnetic distortions or accelerations.

Hardware design

The MTi 10-series is available in two distinctive form factors. The encased version with its IP67 rating and 9-pins high-quality push-pull connector offers user-friendly mounting and interfacing. The casing (57x42x23 mm) of anodized aluminum has 7 alignments points in order to ensure accurate mounting. The 9-pins connector features a serial connection, a USB connection and 3 GPIO’s. For customers requiring even more flexibility, a 24-pins OEM board is available that measures only 37x33x12 mm and weighs 11 grams. All products from the 10-series and the high-performance 100-series (including the MTi-G) are fully interchangeable without software or hardware modification.

Although the two series are identical in software and hardware interfacing, there are several distinctive differences:

  • Gyroscopes: the MTi 10-series uses industrial gyroscopes with a bias stability of 18º/h. The MTi-100 series uses the latest vibration-rejecting gyroscopes featuring an in-run bias stability of 10º/h. Noise density and g-sensitivity are significantly lower as well. This results in a higher immunity against vibrations, a better heading in magnetic distorted environments and an overall more robust orientation.

  • Sensor fusion algorithm: the MTi 10-series orientation is calculated by the proven Xsens Kalman Filter (XKF3i) sensor fusion algorithm. In the MTi 100-series, the orientation (and position) is estimated by the Xsens Estimation Engine (XEE), a powerful sensor fusion algorithm that goes beyond traditional Kalman Filtering. XEE is more flexible and thus copes better with e.g. measurement outliers or distortions.

  • The calibration of the MTi 100-series is more extensive to fully benefit from all the specifications of the gyroscopes.

  • The MTi 100-series includes MTi-G-700 GPS/INS which is the successor of the first GPS/IMU integrated product in this class (Xsens MTi-G, introduced in 2007). The orientation of the MTi-G-700 is GPS-aided, so that long-lasting accelerations have no effect. When GPS is temporarily unavailable, the INS bridges these GPS outages and ensures a higher integrity than GPS position and velocity only. The resulting position update rate is up to 400 Hz.

    MTi-100 series Development Kit

    First-time users are advised to start with the MT Development Kit. The Development Kit contains an MTi-100 IMU, MTi-200 VRU or MTi-300 AHRS, a USB cable, a suitcase and the MT Software Suite on a USB flash drive.

    MT Software Suite

    The MT Software Suite gives easy access to Xsens’ products, allowing users to configure and easily integrate the MTi 10-series/MTi 100-series Motion Trackers in their own applications. The suite contains a specially developed and easy-to-use graphical user interface, as well as drivers for various operating systems and many other useful tools, example source code and documentation.

    Although it is easy to set up the MTi via the low-level XBus protocol, communication is made easy with the Xsens Device API (XDA) which is completely in C-code. The MT SDK includes the following development tools:
    • C++ wrapper
    • Examples for C, C++ and Matlab.
    • Supported operating systems: Windows and Linux.
    • DLL for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
    • Extensive documentation on the MTi, the XBus protocol and the SDK (PDF and HTML)
    The communication interface is identical for all products (MTi-10 series and MTi-100-series, including MTi-G-700 GPS/INS).

    MT Manager

    The MT Manager is Windows application for easy access to the full capabilities of Xsens’ Motion Trackers. It is the tool for getting acquainted with, configuring and analyzing the Motion Trackers. The MT Manager is also capable of recording and playback MT data.
    • Real time visualization of all MT data
    • Logging, exporting and reprocessing data
    • Changing and storing settings in the firmware

    MT Development Tools

    The Xsens Device API (XDA) will help save time in interfacing in a reliable way with Xsens Motion Trackers in a Windows environment. Direct interfacing gives full control and maximum flexibility. The example code can be easily extended to a user-specific program and may be incorporated in programs of customers.
