The MTi 10-series is Xsens’ basic product line, consisting of:

  • MTi-10 IMU: Inertial Measurement Unit
  • MTi-20 VRU: Vertical Reference Unit
  • MTi-30 AHRS: Attitude and Heading Reference System
The MTi-30's multi-core processing unit provides drift free 3D orientation data, as well as calibrated 3D acceleration, 3D rate of turn and 3D earth-magnetic field data.

Product line

The MTi 10-series is available in three integration levels: an IMU, a VRU and an AHRS. The 10-IMU offers sensor data, also available as delta_q and delta_vel. It is an excellent unit for designing own fusion filter algorithms, using the MTi’s excellent signal processing pipeline. The 20-VRU offers gravity referenced roll and pitch and unreferenced heading on top of the sensor data of the MTi. The 30-AHRS is a full 3D AHRS, also providing magnetic-referenced heading.

Signal processing pipeline

All products from the MTi 10-series feature the same state-of-the-art signal processing pipeline with a high bandwidth of 375 Hz for the accelerometers and 415 Hz for the gyroscopes. Oversampling at 10 kHz and a steep digital low-pass filter ensures that there is a high immunity to vibrations. Coning and sculling compensation is performed at an industry-leading 2 kHz. All internal sensors feature a built-in self test.

Xsens Kalman Filter (XKF3i)

XKF3i is the proven sensor fusion algorithm that provides the high robustness in orientation of the MTi-20 VRU and MTi-30 AHRS. Divergence monitoring is an important part of XKF3i and ensures that orientation will be correct even under accelerations and magnetic distortions. XKF3i comes with several filter setting profiles that are tuned for specific conditions and environments.

Hardware design

The MTi 10-series is available in two distinctive form factors. The encased version, with its IP67 rating and 9-pins high-quality push-pull connector offers user-friendly mounting and interfacing. The casing (57x42x23 mm) of anodized aluminum has 7 alignments points in order to ensure accurate mounting. The 9-pins connector features a serial connection, a USB connection and 3 GPIO’s. For customers requiring even more flexibility, a 24-pins OEM board is available that measures only 37x33x12 mm and weighs 11 grams. All products from the 10-series and the high-performance 100-series (including the MTi-G) are fully interchangeable without software or hardware modification.

MTi Development Kit

For first-time users we offer the MTi Development Kit. This kit includes an MTi measurement unit, a test and calibration certificate, a USB cable, our user friendly MT Software Suite, all in a sturdy suitcase. The Development Kit allows users to fully explore the possibilities of the MTi, and the integration possibilities of the MT with your own system. With the Development Kit you have will have your measurement unit up and running in just a few minutes to start your first R&D.

The MTi 10-series is part of a family of MTi products: the MTi 10-series and MTi-100 series (including the MTi-G-700 GPS/INS). All of these products are fully interchangeable in terms of software interfacing and mechanical installation.

Although the two series are identical in software and hardware interfacing, there are several distinctive differences:

  • Gyroscopes: the MTi 10-series uses industrial gyroscopes with a bias stability of 18º/h. The MTi-100 series uses the latest vibration-rejecting gyroscopes featuring an in-run bias stability of 10º/h. Noise density and g-sensitivity are significantly lower as well. This results in a higher immunity against vibrations, a better heading in magnetic distorted environments and an overall more robust orientation.

  • Sensor fusion algorithm: the MTi 10-series orientation is calculated by the proven Xsens Kalman Filter (XKF3i) sensor fusion algorithm. In the MTi 100-series, the orientation (and position) is estimated by the Xsens Estimation Engine (XEE), a powerful sensor fusion algorithm that goes beyond traditional Kalman Filtering. XEE is more flexible and thus copes better with e.g. measurement outliers or distortions.

  • The calibration of the MTi 100-series is more extensive to fully benefit from all the specifications of the gyroscopes.

  • The MTi 100-series includes MTi-G-700 GPS/INS which is the successor of the first GPS/IMU integrated product in this class (Xsens MTi-G, introduced in 2007). The orientation of the MTi-G-700 is GPS-aided, so that long-lasting accelerations have no effect. When GPS is temporarily unavailable, the INS bridges these GPS outages and ensures a higher integrity than GPS position and velocity only. The resulting position update rate is up to 400 Hz.

    MTi-10 series Development Kit

    First-time users are advised to start with the MT Development Kit. The Development Kit contains an MTi-10 IMU, MTi-20 VRU or MTi-30 AHRS, a USB cable, a suitcase and the Software Development Kit on a USB flash drive.

    MT Software Suite

    The MT Software Suite gives easy access to Xsens’ products, allowing users to configure and easily integrate the MTi 10-series/MTi 100-series Motion Trackers in their own applications. The suite contains a specially developed and easy-to-use graphical user interface, as well as drivers for various operating systems and many other useful tools, example source code and documentation.

    Although it is easy to set up the MTi via the low-level XBus protocol, communication is made easy with the Xsens Device API (XDA) which is completely in C-code. The MT SDK includes the following development tools:
    • C++ wrapper
    • Examples for C, C++ and Matlab.
    • Supported operating systems: Windows and Linux.
    • DLL for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
    • Extensive documentation on the MTi, the XBus protocol and the SDK (PDF and HTML)
    The communication interface is identical for all products (MTi-10 series and MTi-100-series, including MTi-G-700 GPS/INS).

    MT Manager

    The MT Manager is Windows application for easy access to the full capabilities of Xsens’ Motion Trackers. It is the tool for getting acquainted with, configuring and analyzing the Motion Trackers. The MT Manager is also capable of recording and playback MT data.
    • Real time visualization of all MT data
    • Logging, exporting and reprocessing data
    • Changing and storing settings in the firmware

    MT Development Tools

    The Xsens Device API (XDA) will help save time in interfacing in a reliable way with Xsens Motion Trackers in a Windows environment. Direct interfacing gives full control and maximum flexibility. The example code can be easily extended to a user-specific program and may be incorporated in programs of customers.
